SKEMA Wing Chun Kung Fu

SKEMA Philippines teaches high-quality Wing Chun in Maayongtubig (Dauin). Teacher Abay Markus has over 40 years of experience.

What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?

Wing Chun is a style of kung fu designed for self-defense. Every movement in the Wing Chun system is designed to defend yourself against stronger opponents or attackers outnumbered. With Wing Chun, women and men can defend themselves equally, since effective self-defense requires neither raw strength nor physical condition. The aim of Wing Chun is that everyone can use it to defend themselves. Because it is an efficient self-defense system, all the required movements are straightforward and very direct in execution. No great mobility, physical condition, or acrobatics are required. It doesn’t matter how you’re attacked, whether it’s a punch, a kick, a chokehold, or anything else, you always have an answer ready. Static processes are deliberately avoided since an emergency situation is always dynamic.

Chi Sao (“sticky hands”) is the heart of the Wing Chun system. It combines all the techniques learned. Chi Sao sharpens the sensory system and trains reflexes so that they are always ready for action. In an emergency, the Wing Chun trainee only needs brief contact and can defend himself intuitively. While in classic Wing Chun Kung Fu the reflexes on the hands (“Chi Sao”) and legs (“Chi Görk”) are trained, SKEMA transfers this “heart” to the whole body. In doing so, SKEMA develops a system of hardening in its own way in the form of relaxation, i.e. it develops buffer zones that protect the trainee from violent effects (whether falling or hitting), comparable to an airbag. If the body reacts reflexively to the impulses and thus develops a body that constantly “breathes”, it can react like the reaction when it comes into contact with a hot stove – namely lightning-fast, instinctively, reflexively – and not just via the arms, but over the whole body.

Who is this type of self-defense suitable for?

In principle, anyone can learn Wing Chun, regardless of their physical constitution and regardless of whether they are male or female. By training the body and paying attention during training, one learns to move accordingly, so that one can also defend oneself against physically superior opponents. SKEMA Wing Chun can be learned at any age and practiced into old age.

What is the effect of SKEMA Wing Chun training?

Slight incorrect posture in the body can be corrected through training. The trunk stability and the back are strengthened and the sense of balance is promoted in a natural way. All of these are natural byproducts of proper martial arts training such as that offered by SKEMA. SKEMA Wing Chun is an ideal life companion because it provides a balance to everyday stress. Regular training trains lightning-fast reflexes increase body awareness and – in combination with the right breathing technique – balances body, mind, and emotions. SKEMA trainees become noticeably more steadfast, balanced, and relaxed.

Wing Chun is part of the SKEMA self-defense course. Each training includes a warm-up and fitness part to strengthen the basic constitution and shake off everyday life. You learn to defend yourself by any means, be it with a punch, a knee, or an elbow. You always have an answer ready. Various exercises are used to train them to use the environment to defend themselves. An ashtray or bar stool can become an efficient weapon in an emergency. It also addresses how stress feels in the body and how to neutralize stress through breathing. Dealing with stress is an important part of self-defense training because there is no greater stress for people than a fight to the death.

The difference between Wing Chun, Wing Tsung, Wing Tzun, Ving Tsun…

There are numerous spellings for Wing Chun in the world. This always means the same type of self-defense. The different spellings result from the translations from Chinese. Depending on the dialect, the name of the martial art is pronounced differently. Depending on the martial arts association, a different spelling is preferred.

Self-defense from 16 years

SKEMA self-defense strengthens your fitness and your self-confidence. You learn to survive in real situations on the street. Hand, foot, and elbow techniques are trained, as well as fighting with street weapons. The effects of SKEMA martial arts are comprehensive – it is therefore also a way to self-mastery.

Every SKEMA training starts with a warm-up and/or fitness-program

During the warm-up, the typical problem areas for tension in the neck, shoulders, and lower back are released and made more flexible. This is followed by technical strengthening training, in which the torso muscles, the back muscles, the shoulder girdle, and the leg muscles are strengthened. Warming up increases mobility and power, improves fitness, and corrects holding defects. This is followed by actual self-defense training.

The basis of SKEMA self-defense consists of attacking and defending with bare hands, knees, feet, and elbows. With partner exercises, body reflexes are trained that are faster than the eye and ear and are also called up automatically when the stress in an emergency situation turns off thinking. Martial arts are not martial arts. We refrain from acrobatics and competition. What matters is the no-frills path to success. SKEMA self-defense contains elements from different styles and is constantly evolving.

In every training session, the handling of the simple weapons of the street is also practiced, as they are more and more common here. In partner exercises, attack, defense, counterattack, and disarmament are reflexively practiced at different distances. All combinations of a stick, knife and empty hand are trained. What you have learned can be transferred to any everyday object – an umbrella, a handbag or even a chair can be used in case of defense, for example in a knife attack. Learning SKEMA self-defense does not require any special previous knowledge or physical strength. It is equal for women and men of all ages.
